Street Repair and Pothole Patching

City crews are routinely
assigned street maintenance duties filling potholes, pavement
repairs, crack sealing etc. To report street pavement concerns
potholes and/or other hazardous street pavement conditions,
please call the street department at 894-8312.
Street Sweeping
The
street department normally completes three (3) to four (4)
street sweeping cycles of all city streets annually. In
addition, city crews sweep streets in preparation of special
events, roadway spills and debris resulting from vehicular
accidents.
Sweeping
Schedule
Spring
- Beginning in March and in preparation of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade,
the street department assigns two shifts to sweep state and major
roadways, including the parade route. City crews then proceed into
residential areas with each shift of two sweepers split on both the east
and west side of the city. First shift crews sweep streets beginning
from the south city limit and, second shift crews sweep beginning from
the north city limit. This first cycle (spring) is completed in
approximately 10-12 weeks.
Summer
- (June – August), one or two cycles are completed with one shift of two
operators (completed within 16-18 weeks).
Fall
- During the fall months once the majority of leaves have dropped from
trees, the street department again assigns two shifts to sweep all city
streets until completed.
The above procedures may vary depending
on weather conditions.

Helpful Hints
Do not mow grass and/or rake
leaves into city streets.
Keep storm drain basins clear of debris. |
Snow and Ice Removal
The
City of Bay City’s snow and ice control efforts are intended to
make your winter driving experience as safe as possible in order
for all of us to access places of employment and emergency
services. The success of our community’s effort to cope
with winter weather events depends on how well government,
citizens, and the news media work together. When it snows,
residents are encouraged to listen for media broadcasts
announcing special snow clearance plans.
City Roadways
The
City’s Street Department is responsible for maintaining approximately 450 lane
miles of roadway within the City limits, equaling the same distance from Bay
City to Sault Sainte Marie and back.
Snow & Ice Control Readiness
Each
winter season a first response team staffed by the Street Department ensures
city readiness in the event of a snow and/or ice occurrence. The first response
team is staffed 24 hours a day from November through April.
When Does the City Begin Snow & Ice Removal?
As
soon as snow or ice conditions develop, City crews will begin salting operations
to State trunk lines and major streets consisting of four assigned routes within
the City limits.
Snow
plowing operations are put into place when snow accumulations of 2” or more
develop, beginning with State trunk lines, bridges, and major streets.
Snow & Ice Removal Priorities
Following is the City’s snow and ice removal schedule in priority order:
-
Emergency vehicle routes, state highways/trunk lines, major streets and
bridges
-
School routes
-
Business districts
-
Residential streets and parking lots
-
Alleys
Depending
upon the severity of the storm, the above priorities may change.
Street
Parking
Please refrain from parking on city streets whenever snowfall conditions require
that residential streets be plowed. Parked cars can cause delays in plowing
“your” street.
If a
disabled vehicle remains on a City street for more than 48 hours, the vehicle
may be towed. The vehicle owner may be fined and charged with a towing fee,
along with daily impound charges.
Sidewalk Snow
Property owners are responsible for keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice
within 24 hours after a snowfall. Please do not deposit snow upon any public
property, including streets.
Driveways
Due
to snowplowing, a residual amount of snow will be deposited into every driveway
and onto sidewalks. This may occur repeatedly throughout the day depending on
the severity of the storm. It is the responsibility of the resident to clear
their driveway. The City recommends shoveling or blowing the snow back behind
the curbing or asphalt and away from the driveway entrance. This will prevent
excessive snow buildup from occurring.
Fire
Hydrants
The
fire hydrants are maintained by City crews; however, the City does encourage
area residents to help clear snow from hydrants within their neighborhood.
 |
Helpful Hints
Shoveling snow from sidewalks and your
drive onto city streets will cause the residual snow to be re-plowed
back on your sidewalk and drive. Instead shovel or blow the snow back
behind the curb. Do not deposit snow upon any public property,
including streets and sidewalks. |
