Responsibilities

Bay City’s Responsibility:

The City of Bay City owns the Water Main and the line between the main and the Curb Stop box. This is normally located by the sidewalk or in an alley. This is normally in the out lawn, 18 inches outside of the sidewalk or in an alley.  This is the main shut off for the service.

Customer’s Responsibility for service lines:

The service line from the Stop Box into the building is the owner’s responsibility.  This includes any meter pits.

Customer’s Responsibility for verifying meter reads and accessibility:

It is the customer’s responsibility to check their meter reads for discrepancies between the Meter and the ROM.  If there is a discrepancy between the read on the meter and the read on the ROM, the customer is responsible for the amount shown on the meter itself.

It is also the customer’s responsibility to check zero usage on their bill and read their meter month to month to check for zero usage.

The Water Meter must be kept accessible to water employees, please do not block your meter so we cannot get to it.

If there is a question about a bill, contact the water billing department immediately. Any changes that may need to be done will need to done during the current billing cycle.

If there is a problem with your meter you should contact the water department to have the problem corrected.

Plumbing:

Most of the service lines between the stop box and the building are copper, but many are older galvanized or lead pipe. There are also many building where all of the plumbing inside the building is galvanized.  Older service lines and building plumbing may have corrosion problems or may also be partially plugged, thus reducing the available flow.  A frequent source of plugged plumbing is at fittings where dis-similar metals are connected together, such as galvanized fittings connecting to copper pipe.  If such a connection is unavoidable, a “dielectric fitting” should be installed between the two.
